Song Quest

Stars:******

Imagine a place where you can hear a voice on the other side of world without a telephone, or heal without medicine. Imagine learning the dreadful power of killing without a weapon, or sending someone to sleep with your voice alone. All this and more is possible in the world of the singers. On the island of echoes, young children are taught the songs of power. Challa, with the power to send someone to sleep. Kashe, with the power to make someone laugh. Shi, with the power to make someone cry. Aushan, with the power to unlock the deepest fears, and make someone cower in terror. And Yhen, with power to kill.

Rialle is a final year novice on the island of echoes. Just as she is about to finish her training, she suddenly begins to hear half-creatures, who are half human and half animal. Because of this great talent, the first singer, who is the leader of all the singers, sends her with a contingent of other singers, to try and stop the ferocious Karchholders from brutally maiming, and in some cases, eating, the half creatures.

Meanwhile, Kherron, a novice from Rialle's class, has run away; determined to prove that he is just as good as any singer on the island. When their paths cross, can Raille and Kherron stop the mysterious Kihzpriest from destroying the island of echoes? Or will the singers be destroyed? Read the series to find out!

This is a really compelling story about friendship and magic, where magic really takes the backseat. Rialle is full of fear at the beginning, but by the end has found her courage. Kherron is cocky and full of himself at first, but soon learns humility and patience. The ending is really good, and wraps up just enough to leave you satisfied yet excited to read the rest of the series.
